Welcome to the City of Colstrip's official web site. As you view the pages, you will see our wonderful town has many opportunities for individuals, families and children of all ages. A large variety of recreational offerings, great school system, cultural events, headquarters of the four county economic development group, Southeastern Montana Development Corporation, excellent medical facilities and staff and a vibrant agricultural community make Colstrip a unique place to live and work. Boating, fishing, picnicking and more happen at Castle Rock Lake. There is a well-developed and maintained trail around the lake offering year around walking, cycling or fishing access. A challenging, well-groomed and maintained nine hole golf course and a fully equipped recreation center offering year around classes taught by highly trained staff, an outdoor pool with waterslide and a newly constructed Splash Park are all available free of charge to residents of Colstrip. Parks abound in Colstrip with one of the most extensive and well developed park systems in the state. Colstrip has received the Tree City USA award for several years running and was honored as Sports Illustrated's 50th Anniversary Sportstown in Montana.
We have a dedicated staff of teachers and administrators that help make our schools one of the best in the region. Pinebutte Elementary houses K-5th grades, Frank Brattin Middle School hosts 6th-8th graders and the 9th-12th grades attend the Colstrip High School. A full size heated indoor pool is available to students and public alike throughout the school year at the high school.
A cultural hub of our community is "The Schoolhouse History & Art Center". It was originally built in 1924 as a schoolhouse for the new community of coal miners and area ranchers. It has been refurbished and holds much of Colstrip’s early history in photos. Throughout the year the Schoolhouse hosts an impressive array of events and entertainment as well as art enrichment and exploration classes for all.
Our sincere hope is that as you browse through this web site, you will learn more about us and will want to visit or even live here, in one of the friendliest, safest towns in Montana.
